7 Tips To Run a Business & Travel

Travel Map.jpeg

We believe travel is an important part of life. To take a break from your usual surroundings and experience other cultures can be very inspiring, it also helps personal development and can give you a fresh perspective on your own empire.

It is a common misconception that to travel means that you have to go away for an extended period of time, or is unattainable and out of reach if you run your own company. We are here to share our tips for travelling while running an empire.

Take Your Business To The Cloud

Being able to work from anywhere is a real bonus- even if this only applies to your admin days. Take a look at our previous posts about going paperless and apps that help you. This is something we are strong advocates of, we too are a 100% cloud and paperless company.

Invest In Your Staff Or A VA

If you want your business to run smoothly without you for a few days or so then it is important to have systems in place that your staff will understand. Streamline your processes and make sure your staff work to the same goal as you. Look into reward schemes and spend the time making sure your employees understand what you do and why you do it. If you work alone or cannot afford employees invest in a virtual PA, look at your list of tasks and see what tasks really need to be done by you (e.g. financial forecasts) and what can be outsourced to a PA (e.g. booking flights, scheduling social media, etc.).

Regular Talks With Your Accountant

Excuse us for the shameless plug, but it is a valid point! We offer monthly management reports and road mapping packages that help you stay on track whilst achieving a work-life blend that works for you, having someone to check in with and be accountable to can really help.

Streamline Systems

I just stressed the importance of streamlining systems and making them easy for staff to understand but what do I really mean by this? First, you have to take a look at one of your systems, and then look at the time is takes and how many problems occur with the existing system. Look at ways technology or your external support network could help.

Cash Flow Management

Cash flow can make or break for businesses. Focus making reoccurring income, and this can be from your primary business or a source of passive income. Look into ways you can get paid on a certain date. Applications such as GoCardless, can help with this. GoCardless can collect payments from your clients bank account and deposit it into yours- a great example of automation!

Picking Travel Times

Here is a key point. You need to identify when is the best time to go away. Identify the busiest times in your week and your month and your year. This is something you can see from your financial reporting and know from keeping a time diary.

Customer Service

Customer Service is the one thing that cannot be neglected when you travel. Urgent problems do need to be dealt with immediately one way or another, and people need to feel that they are number one priority. Look into website chat systems and always ensure Facebook chat notifications are turned on! Keep updating social media and don't be scared to share your adventures on your company social media channels. You are human, and people appreciate a human touch on social media.

It is important to remember that travelling is different to a holiday. Travelling doesn't mean all play and no work, but being your own boss allows your to choose when you want to work- it's a perk of the job! Remember that a few breaks nearer to home counts just as much as flying far away and most of all- enjoy it!
